A crime and a tort are technical terms used in the legal world. The word crime is more commonly understood as crimes are newsworthy events and reach headlines. They affect the society we live in.
A tort different from a crime because although it is a wrong doing it is classified as a civil offense. A tort interferes with a private person or property.
Crime | Tort | |
Mean | Crime mean an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. In other word an illegal act for which someone can be punished by the government especially: a gross violation of law. | In legal terms, mean a tort happens when negligence directly damages a person or his/her property. There are different types of tort, but all of them result in injury to a private person or property. |
Effect on society | A crime affects society and the criminal law will ensure the perpetrators are punished for their crimes | A tort upsets the wellbeing of an individual and they may seek legal action and compensation. |
Court | Crimes cases are presented in the Criminal Court. | Torts cases are presented in the Civil Court. |
Compensation | Compensation for crimes is already mentioned in the law. | Compensation for torts is given on the basis of the damages to the aggrieved party. |
Exapmle | Crime Examples Threats and Harassments, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Youth Dating Violence, Child Abuse,Elder Abuse and Neglect,Gang Violence, Impaired Driving Etc. | a sweeper has a duty to put up a wet floor sign after mopping. If he or she fails to put up the sign and someone falls and injures themselves, a negligence tort case may be filed. Other Example of negligence torts include accident( car, bicycle other) and medical malpractice. |
